First, a little historyĪdvances in technology over the past 20 years have shifted a lot of what used to be audio communication to text based communication, whether through email, texting, work chat, or social media. We’ve analyzed these examples to show you how emoji add layers of understanding and emotion to conversation and text based culture. Finally, emoji can convey how a person is participating in a conversation ( □). Emoji help define or signal a subculture (□□), and simplify communication within a subculture ( ⛏️). Understanding the roles emoji play in different communities allow us to explore their often hidden meaning in communication.Įmoji contribute to conversation in different ways: symbolically, they communicate identity by drawing from old symbolism (□) and contribute to new symbolism (□). In order to succeed in shared understanding, both the user and the reader must attribute the same meaning to the emoji, whether that’s texting with your family, writing copy for an ad campaign, or following a recipe on Hell’s Kitchen with Gordon Ramsay. ![]() This is just one disturbing example that shows how important context is when using emoji.Įmoji are a language: the way people assign meaning to emoji varies and is representative of culture. Is the monkey or banana emoji always racist? No, but when posting it on a Black footballer’s account, it absolutely is. There have been calls to ban the monkey emoji for years when situations like this arise, but the emoji is not the problem here: the racist context is the problem. The abuse was so bad that the term “Saka’s Instagram” began trending on Twitter as commentary escalated about people being so openly racist. ![]() The social accounts for 3 of the Black English players, Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, were targeted with hate speech, including repeated use of all variations of the monkey emoji and banana emoji. After England’s EURO championship defeat on Sunday, a wave of racist backlash against Black players made news and flooded social media.
